How to Maintain & Clean Acrylic Sheets

Knowing how to clean and maintain acrylic is important to extending its lifespan. Acrylic is a safer and durable alternative to glass and other plastics but it’s important to take care of it in order to outlast other materials. Because acrylic can be susceptible to certain cleaners and hazards, here are some ways to properly take care of acrylic sheeting.

Cleaning Acrylic Sheeting

Acrylic sheeting can be damaged by harsh solvents and cleaners. Use a commercial plastic cleaner or mild soap and water to remove dirt and debris. When applying cleaner, use a non-abrasive lint-free or microfiber cloth that won’t scratch the surface. For tough grease, oil, or tar residue, use commercial grade hexane or kerosene. All solvents need to be wiped clean with fresh water and blotted dry to reduce and prevent water spotting.

When cleaning acrylic sheeting, never use ammonia, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, or gasoline as a cleaning solution. These kinds of solvents can cause cracks in acrylic sheeting and give the surface a frosted appearance.

Where to Store Acrylic

Like most materials, avoid storing acrylic in extreme temperatures, above 100-degree Fahrenheit. Don’t store acrylic in direct sunlight in hot conditions. This can cause the acrylic sheeting to expand and reform

Repairing Acrylic Sheeting

Scratches, haziness, and small cracks can be easily fixed in acrylic sheeting. For removing and buffing out scratches and haze, use a plastic polish, car polish, or automobile wax with a clean, microfiber cloth. If the acrylic is still hazy, carefully sand the acrylic using a number of different grits, followed by a more abrasive polish.

Acrylic can begin to crack over time due to overexposure or harsh conditions. For small cracks, use a 1/8″ drill bit to drill a hole on both sides of the crack. Use a silicone sealant to fill the crack and let it dry. This should help restore the integrity and appearance of the acrylic.

Reducing Static Electricity

Acrylic plastic is a natural conductor of electricity. The static electricity charge can attract dirt and debris from the air and cause buildup. To reduce and eliminate static electricity buildup, use an anti-static cleaner for plastics with a soft cloth. This should neutralize the acrylic sheeting, and reduce the attraction of dirt.
